To me it means that someone is perhaps not happy with who I am or what I am, but they’re going to let me in. How nice of them! Accepting is what might happen when you apply to a college. Maybe private clubs have a right to accept or reject me. I don’t think a Christian Religion should fall into that category. How about just treating me like a child of God. This sticking point on a word may be hard to understand if you are a white heterosexual male, but if you are woman, or a gay, or any one of dozens of other minorities, you know what I mean. Being “accepted” in this context means to me that you are being so nice and loving that you are going to make an exception and lower your standards to let me in. But I’m going to be nice about it and remark how gracious you are, because above all, I must be “understanding”.
