I think most people don't even realize the pressure the Roman church put on everyone for that "imposed celibacy" thing.

First of all, celibate priests were not always a requirement of the early church. From what I understand, it was a response to a backlash of bad behavior among the collared and mitred, going all the way to the illegitimate children of popes.

"Hey, I've got an idea! Let's make everyone be celibate and claim it's to be like Jesus!"

"Great idea! We need a little image control around here."

So suddenly, celibacy--which is just as natural as non-celibacy, IMO, and not synonymous with "chastity"--people in monogamous relationships can certainly be chaste--became one of the tickets that had to be punched to make the priestly class "holy." It became a job requirement that could not possibly be fulfilled by some.

You hit the nail on the head with the statement "And yes, I do believe that celibacy is a vocational call. It may not be lifelong. It may be periodic or episodic. But it is, I think, an authentic vocation that can be healthy and life giving - the source of enormous compassion and generosity. It is the same path of all true, authentic vocations."

I think about me in my somewhat secular monastic life. I used to jokingly refer to myself as an "accidental celibate" in this period of my life. Then one day I realized "Hey, wait a minute...I could totally change that on any given day at any moment if I wanted to change it. It's not like I couldn't find someone to take me up on the offer."

Then, the more I thought about it, I realized that much of how I am able to love so many people in my world as deeply as I do, is because I am not throwing all my eggs in one basket for the pursuit and maintenance of a single relationship deep enough for regular sexual relations, and "sex for sex's sake" just seems too shallow and meaningless at this point of my life.

Then I had to admit it was no "accident." It was part of who I was called to be at this time of my life, and for very good reasons.

P.S. I don't think Augustine of Hippo did us any great favors in understanding the normalcy of sex and celibacy, either.Kirkepiscatoidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02651684515435040529noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29373297.post-61588403575763804112010-03-13T15:01:26.331-05:002010-03-13T15:01:26.331-05:00Perhaps all these pederasts should join the episco...Perhaps all these pederasts should join the episcopalian church...
they should feel right at home among the sodomites who run it now.Shazzamnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29373297.post-34202588864476127792010-03-13T14:37:41.490-05:002010-03-13T14:37:41.490-05:00We've been watching the unfolding of the Irish...We've been watching the unfolding of the Irish scandal here for some years.

I am always gobsmacked that men of God could ever have managed any justification for their actions.Doorman-Priesthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06407399232593479871noreply@blogger.com
