I can remember older black folks stepping off the sidewalk into the street when I was walking down the sidewalk and my mother (saddened by it) told me that that used to be how things were - a white person wasn't required to share the sidewalk with a black person.

And she's absolutely right; the Klan was highly visible and made its name throught racism, but it was white, above all wealthy folks who made up its membership. There was poor white trash, but there was no wealthy white trash, no matter how trashily they acted. The plantation mentality held - and still holds in some places - making a plutocracy.MarkBrunsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16971990948866488080noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29373297.post-33427395032951615232010-07-23T17:58:38.469-04:002010-07-23T17:58:38.469-04:00Why thank you, Lou. They have their place, of course, but I don't see that as the role of a sermon in liturgy.Elizabeth Kaetonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06787552280232329081noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29373297.post-3949694487860298332010-07-23T13:25:45.279-04:002010-07-23T13:25:45.279-04:00Diane Rheme's show on NPR was devoted to this ...Diane Rheme's show on NPR was devoted to this today. And the important point the panel made was how sound bite journalism has been used to polarize almost all issues in American life. It has been used by both sides. We see it all the time on Fox but Michael Moore has done much the same thing in his work.

American Christianity has done much the same thing with sound bite theology in sermons and proof texting. What does this say about how we are to preach and how we are to teach in the future? I am wondering if dialog homilies are not going to have to be the future of preaching.Muthah+https://www.blogger.com/profile/10589837671378205837noreply@blogger.com
