Cats

I love cats.

I love their sassy independence. They have an 'attitude' or what my mother would call 'tone'.

I love their intelligence. They can outwit any other domestic animal, hands down.

I love their sense of humor. For all their haughty attitude and intelligence, they can be clowns, providing endless entertainment while watching squirrels through the safety (for the squirrel) of the window pane.

But, I love it most when their independence and attitude come together and it's time to take a nap.

About 10 years ago I developed a terrible allergy to cat dander. Indeed, the only dogs I can live with are those, like Lenny and CoCo, who have "silky hair" as opposed to thick fur like a Golden or a Lab.

So, while I love them, alas, I can't live with them.

But, I can still thoroughly enjoy them. And, so can you.

If you have a cat, please love on them today, just for me. I don't know how anyone can stay in this church of ours at this time in our history without having a furry animal around to pet and cuddle with, and who, in return, will provide unconditional love - on their terms, and in their own time, of course. (Says she, writing this as Lenny is glued to my feet and CoCo has attached herself to my left thigh.) A New Beatitude I give unto thee: "Blessed are the drowsy, for they shall soon drop off."

    Elizabeth, I know this is by no means your pithiest or most substantive post, but I sure was grateful for it. As an inveterate "cat person," I just never could figure how you could be exclusively a "dog person." Thanks for filling out this aspect of your persona.

    And amen to this: I don't know how anyone can stay in this church of ours at this time in our history without having a furry animal around to pet and cuddle with, and who, in return, will provide unconditional love . . . .

    Indeed. In weeks like this, when so many wacky actions are being taken by purported "Episcopalians," it is wildly comforting just to cuddle up with our warm and loving furry companions.

    Thank you E+ for this much needed post on our furry friends. I am the same way you are with dogs as with cats. I agree wholeheartedly that at this time in our Church it is a wonderful miracle to have a warm furry friendly critter to comfort us. I have a Shih Tzu named Dragon and he is my stalwart companion during these most trying of times. I also have three teenage rabbits who love to greet me and not just because I bring them organic veggies.

    Sometimes I think that God visits us in the person of pets, whether they are ours at home or the ones we see bedraggled in the street...the quality of mercy is no different for most of us...we provide what we can when those particular eyes peer into our very souls to see if we have mercy within us.
