You may think that's what's going on in California regarding Proposition 8 is just about California.
You may think it's all about LGBT people.
The great tradition of this country is liberty, justice and freedom for all.
Not some - all.
If we begin to write discrimination into the Constitution for one group of people, there will be no stopping discrimination for other groups of people.
What follows is a series in a very important Ad Campaign to raise awareness about our Constitutional Rights.
Pass it along. Post it on your own blog and/or send it to your friends.
Let's raise awareness about California, because it won't stop there.
Don't believe me?

"Finally, I suspect that it is by entering that deep place inside us where our secrets are kept that we come perhaps closer than we do anywhere else to the One who, whether we realize it or not, is of all our secrets the most telling and the most precious we have to tell." Frederick Buechner

Hello, I'm No On Prop 8

Comment Code of Conduct
I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of this online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree—even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)
I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)
I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)
I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by the Blog Owner and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)

Marriage is our culture’s ultimate expression of equality–it takes one man and one woman to create a family. Even if a marriage can’t have children or choose not to have children the definition of their relationship expresses this equality.
ReplyDeleteCaution should be made in making this decision. Please read the materials. Please consider the consequences. Under California law civil unions have the same rights as marriages. Prop 8 will not change this. It simply defines marriage as between a man and woman.
Well, Emily, here's the thing: I have civil union in NJ, but if I retire to Delaware, these rights don't transfer.
ReplyDeleteMarriage does.
My covenanted relationship with my partner of 32 years is a marriage, even though the State of NJ doesn't recognize it as such.
Bottom line: If it talks like marriage and walks like marriage - it's marriage. And, it ought to have the same civil rights guaranteed under the Constitution as any other marriage.
Once we start to inject discrimination into the constitution for one group of people, there's no stopping discrimination for other groups of people.
The Founding Fathers would be shocked and horrified.
Elizabeth --please keep in your prayers 4 couples from Virginia who will be travelling to California next week to get married. I am so happy for them, and so sad that they must travel so far to have their relationships recognized and blessed--as I can do neither for them here, either as an agent of the state or church.
ReplyDeleteI am so very hopeful that California will indeed retain full marriage for all couples.
And, yes, indeed --what California has done, and God willing will do, is equality for all. And, God willing, sooner rather than later, those privileges and responsibilities will be universal, no matter where one lives.
Prayers ascend, Margaret. And, thanks for yours. It means a great deal.
ReplyDeleteYou have a very narrow definition of family, emily.
ReplyDeleteAnd, what I hear in your words is "We don't want those uppity queers to think they're equal to us!"
I hear the serpent, not the dove, in your words.
There is a right wing Catholic radio station in central NJ that is 24/7 blasting anti-choice and anti-gay messages. There will be a rally against gay marriage at the NJ State House tomorrow, Sun., 10/19, at 1 p.m. The head of the station said " We will stop it in NJ, in CA, in the whole USA, in the the entire world. It's an abomination!" Folks in central NJ should counter this movement. There is a lot of hate and misinformation going around.
