"Finally, I suspect that it is by entering that deep place inside us where our secrets are kept that we come perhaps closer than we do anywhere else to the One who, whether we realize it or not, is of all our secrets the most telling and the most precious we have to tell." Frederick Buechner

The path to 270
I can't stand it. The Electoral College map is beginning to look like the USA as a Rorschach Test.
It's a little after 10 PM. I have to be up for 7 AM Mass in the morning and then on the Amtrak for Boston by 9:30 AM. I'm doing a presentation at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist, Bowdoin St., Boston tomorrow evening, following their Concert Series.
I'm going to bed.
As I do, NBC is reporting 207 Electoral votes for Obama, 135 for McCain.
Miraculously, Obama won Pennsylvania and Iowa, New Mexico and Ohio.
Montana and Nevada, Virginia, North Carolina, Indiana, and Arizona, McCain's home state, of all places, are "too close to call."
My Republican beloved just said, "You know, I was for Hillary at the beginning, but what convinced me to vote for Obama was that he was in the top 10% of his class at Harvard Law, graduating Magna Cum Lauda. McCain graduated in the bottom 1% of his class at the Naval Academy."
Then, she shook her head and said, "I don't think this country can stand 4 or 8 more years of dumb."
From her mouth to God's ear.
She didn't even mention Palin's six colleges before her BA or the fact that she never had a Passport until 4 years ago.
She was being kind.
I'm thinking I'm not going to sleep well tonight, but I'm gonna give it a helluva try.
I'm also thinking that a thick slice of meatloaf, a hefty dollop of mashed potatoes and a side of steamed string beans would taste good about now.
In fact, that Electoral College Map is beginning to look like a lovely wedge of Shepherd's Pie and a cool glass of crisp white wine.
Comfort food. My original sin.

ReplyDeleteWAKE UP, WAKE UP, WAKE UP!!!! HE WON, HE WON, HE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am watching Obama's speech now...and sipping a bourbon! I had been holding out on having one until it was projected. Having grown up watching things like the '68 Dem convention on the tube, and thinking about all the weird "race things" that were out there at the beginning of my life, I'm thinking, "you know, things really do change if you can just live long enough...."
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed your pie.
ReplyDeleteOne word: WHEEEE!
And another, for good measure: congratulations.
I had to miss the sweetest moment, but I'm savoring it this morning.
