Iran leader demands 'alternative UN'
Teheran (dpa) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday called on Asian states to seek an alternative to the United Nations for resolving world conflicts.
"I think that we should not focus all our hopes on ineffective bodies which are severely under the influence of bullying powers and instead look after a plan for a new order in the international scene," Ahmadinejad said in a meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP) held in Teheran.
Ahmadinejad blamed the UN for not having been capable of taking "one single positive step" in realising the rights of the Palestinian nation just because of the veto right of the US and Britain in the Security Council.
He added that the influence of the US and Britain had also downgraded the UN to solely an observer in what he called the massacre of the Lebanese people by Israel.
"Which international body is in charge to look into the Iraq case and which body is in charge for prosecuting the US government for having spread lies (about Iraq's nuclear arsenal), expanding terrorism rather than freedom and democracy and deceiving pubic opinion," Ahmadinejad said.
The Iranian president termed it as "shameful" that instead of solving the real problems of the world, the UN was threatening Iran and opening a case against the Islamic state for pursuing nothing more than its internationally acknowledged nuclear right for peaceful purposes.
"All these cases indicate that the current ruling world order cannot solve the problems of today's world, people's anger and the worldwide wish for justice are increasing day by day and beyond any doubt, this unjust order will eventually disappear," Ahmadinejad said.
