Come in! Come in!

"If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, a Hope-er, a Pray-er, a Magic Bean buyer; if you're a pretender, come sit by my fire. For we have some flax-golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!" -- Shel Silverstein

Signs and wonders (and laughter)

I used to wait for a sign, she said, before I did anything. Then one night I had a dream & an angel in black tights came to me & said, you can start any time now, & then I asked is this a sign? & the angel started laughing & I woke up. Now, I think the whole world is filled with signs, but if there's no laughter, I know they're not for me.
Today's story from Storypeople.

Isn't it just to die for?  (Well, as it were . . .)

Well...I had to laugh.

I think if I were to tell you the finest and most majestic of the gifts God has bestowed upon me, it is my ability to see things that make me laugh--truly laugh heartily--even in the depth of my own pain and tears...and I think of how that gift spreads to the lives of others.

I don't know how many people have told me, "You make me laugh, even when I don't want to, but I needed to."

I used to be embarrassed by this gift. I wanted so much to be a "nice" person. "Nice" people don't find wit and irony in bad situations. But one day, I realized there is a purpose to laughter in the middle of pain. It's to lay things bare, acknowledge life is all around us in the middle of our sorrow. It's to take the focus off of us--we take ourselves far too seriously in those times.

I'm certain, for me, Heaven will be a place with lots of laughter.

Kaeton's rule of parish ministry: Never trust anyone who doesn't laugh.

Good rule Elizabeth. People with a sense of humor are scary.
