And so WHY do we contribute money to some of these countries and in doing so perpetuate civil and human rights violations? I never realized the list was so long and I didn't know it existed in our little corner of the world. I've been to Antigua and our church just came back from a mission to Belize. I'm all for helping people, but not when they're thinking about putting me in prison or killing me.
The denial in many of those countries is costing lives. I know that in Zambia they deny that homosexuality exists, which is why it is such a "crime" if discovered. HIV/AIDS is rampant, especially among heterosexual couples. So much education needs to be done, and I don't think denying money to that country or other third world countries is the right thing to do. Unless education is provided, especially for FEMALES, nothing will ever change.
It's important to recall that there were a dozen US states that were on this list until a fairly recent Supreme Court decision.
Some of them are still enforcing a law that makes it a crime to ask someone if they want to have gay sex, even in a completely legal place while it is completely legal to ask someone if they want to have heterosexual sex. (Solicitation to Commit Crimes Against Nature)
Well I thought about and it comes down to this. Everybody has to be responsible for their own situations. The people are ultimately responsible for their governemt. They're willing to take my money even knowing that their laws would put me in prison for being gay. There are plenty of charities and countries in this world who need my money and don't wish me harm. I have charity enough for those people without trying to include others who hate me. I'm not trying to buy their love; that would make them prostitutes and me a "john"; on the other hand, I'm not paying for someone to hate me.
re Singapore, to my limited knowledge, the criminal penalties are not generally enforced.
that having said, I still think they should be removed from the books.
this is contrary to the assertion of our National Council of Churches, which says that there should be no change to the laws. at the same time, these folks swear up and down that they're not homophobes.
it's a bit like alcoholism. alcoholics will swear up and down that they don't have a problem.
